Brigham Young Sweeps Utah State Volleyball Tuesday Add Comment Sep 14, 2011
LOGAN, Utah Jennifer Hamson and Nicole Warner each had 13 kills as Brigham Youngdefeated Utah States volleyball team in three sets (25-22, 25-21, 25-19) here Tuesday night.
Brigham Young improves to 10-2 on the season with the win and snapped a two-match losing streak to Utah State who falls to 4-7 with the loss.
Junior opposite side hitter Shay Sorensen (North Ogden, Utah) had 11 kills and hit .231 (11-5-26) to lead Utah State,while junior outside hitter Josselyn White (Smithfield, Utah) added 10 kills and 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season and the seventh of her career. Junior libero Laurel Bodily (Idaho Falls, Idaho) added 22 digs for her fourth career 20-plus dig match,while sophomore outside hitter Tumua Etimani (Richardson, Texas) added a career-best two service aces.
Utah State and Brigham Young combined for 13 ties and five lead changes in the first set as neither team led by more than two points until BYU went on a 5-0 run to turn a 19-18 deficit into a 23-19advantage en route to its three-point win. BYU hit .140 (14-8-43) in the first set and USU hit .195 (14-6-41), but the Aggies also committed three service errors and three blocking errors in the loss. Sorensen led the Aggies with six kills in the opening set and hit .750 (6-0-8).
Brigham Young held an early 6-3 lead in thesecond set and led by as many as five before Utah State rallied to get within one at 17-16, 18-17 and later 21-20 before the Cougars finished with a 4-1 run for the win. Sorensen added four more kills for USU here as it hit .109 (12-7-46) and BYU hit .217 (15-5-46).
Brigham Young once again took a 6-3 lead in the third set, but Utah State fought back and went up 9-8. BYU regained the momentum and held the lead until USU tied it at 19-19. From there, the Cougars scored the final six points of the match for the sweep.
Utah State finished the match with a .085 (34-23-130) hitting percentage and Brigham Young hit .181 (41-18-127). BYU also had 11 more digs (71-60) and 3.5 more team blocks (11.0-7.5), while both teams registered two service aces and seven service errors.
Utah State returns to action on Friday, Sept. 16 when it plays at UC Irvine at 8 p.m. (MT).
