Houston, TX- The Salt Lake Community College Bruin Volleyball team split the final day of the Patriots Day Tournament finishing the weekend 2-2. The Bruins defeated Jefferson College 3-1 (26-24 25-18 16-25 31-29) but could not stop a hard-hitting Blinn College team losing 1-3 (19-25 25-19 15-25 14-25). The Bruins are 9-3 overall.
In the first match of the day Salt Lake took the first two sets (26-24 25-18 16-25 31-29) from Jefferson College with ease, however, the final two sets proved to be the toughest. In the fourth set neither team was willing to give in with SLCC eventually winning 31-29. Freshmen Maddie Bushman and Leyla Redondo led the Bruins with double-doubles. Bushman collected 14 kills with 11 digs and two aces while Redondo grabbed 10 kills, 12 digs and 4 block assists. Betty Van Lith served over a team high five aces and had 42 set assists. Defensively, sophomores Whitney Ashton had a team high 19 digs and Kellie Turner followed with 17 digs.
The final match was SLCCs toughest battling against powerhouse #4 Blinn College. The Salt Lake defense was never able to gain control of the match with Salt Lake falling three sets to one (19-25 25-19 15-25 14-25). Mayra Ramirez, Kellie Turner and Leyla Redondo all finished with double digit kills. Ramirez had 11 kills with four block assists and one solo block. Turner added 12 kills with eight digs and Redondo had a team high 13 kills.
The Bruins who are 9-3 overall, will head to Twin Falls, Idaho for the Starr Corporation Invitational on September 16th-17th.
