SUU - Koplin Narrowly Misses Qualifying Mark on Day Two Add Comment    May 28, 2010

AUSTIN, Texas - May 28 - Kristi Koplin narrowly missed a qualifying mark in the women's discus on Friday afternoon by throwing 162 feet 11 inches, a mere nine inches away from a berth in to the NCAA Championships.  Also in field event results, Jacki Stoddard threw a new school record in the javelin, finishing in the top half at the NCAA West Preliminaries.

Stoddard, competing yesterday, threw 146 feet five inches, breaking her own school record that she set during the Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships.  The mark helped the senior finish in the top half of the field made up of 45 student-athletes.  Stoddard would have needed a mark greater than 158 feet eight inches to have qualified for the national championships.

Koplin was one of 16 student-athletes to advance to the finals of the women's discus, but needed to finish in the top 12 to advance to the NCAA Championships.  Koplin finished in the 14th place and would have needed a mark greater than 163 feet 8 inches to move on to the championships in Eugene.

On the track, Kodai Kusano and Shaye Maurer turned in finishing times of 14.87 and 14.43 in the men's 110-meter hurdles and women's 100-meter hurdles, respectively.  Neither time was below the cut to advance to the finals on Saturday afternoon.

The final event for Southern Utah on the day, the men's high jump, did not have results readily available and will be included in the recap on Saturday.  Slated to compete on Saturday will be Sharla Manuele in the women's 1,500 and 5,000-meters, Carlos Valle in the men's discus and Ashley Morrison and Kristi Koplin in the women's hammer.
