SUU VB - SUU Volleyball Hosting Red/White Scrimmage on Saturday Night Add Comment    Sep 19, 2010

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Aug. 20 - Southern Utah University womens volleyball will enter its second season in 2010 and will provide fans a sneak peek of the roster this Saturday during the Red/White Scrimmage.  The event is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Centrum Arena and is free to all who would like to attend.

"We are excited for this chance to practice in front of a crowd and have the element of crowd noise," head coach Debby Baker said.  "We are also hoping that this match helps to get rid of the nerves prior to our season opener next weekend.  We'll plan on working with several lineups on Saturday night as we look to find the right fit on the court."

Headlining the talent for the 2010 Thunderbirds will be Analaine Pelaez, the 2009 Summit League Freshman of the Year and a 2009 first-team all-Summit League selection.  Senior Jazmine Maafala will also be a key in the Thunderbirds success, serving as a complimentary hitter to Pelaez on the outside.

Senior Brittney Clark will be back for her senior season and will be directing the SUU attack in her position as setter.  She will be looking for quick-hitting middles Cashaana Renfro and Tess Lawrence who led the team in hitting percentage several times last season.

The 2010 roster will still be young, comprised of only four seniors and one junior compared to five sophomores and six freshmen.  Newcomers will provide depth at several postion, particularly on the T-Bird attack with additions to the outside and middle.

Southern Utah will officially open its 2010 campaign at the end of the month when the Thunderbirds travel to Laramine, Wyo. to compete at the University of Wyoming Tournament.  SUU will host its home opener against the Centenary Ladies on September 16.
