SUU Volleyball Set to Open the Season at Wyoming Add Comment    Sep 19, 2010

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Aug. 25 - Southern Utah University womens volleyball will open its 2010 campaign this weekend when the Thunderbirds take part in the UniWyo Wyoming Invitational, facing Murray State, Wyoming, Northern Arizona and Central Arkansas.

SUU will look to repeat its fortunes of 2009 when the T-Birds opened the year with a 3-0 sweep over Delaware State in the first action for SUU volleyball in more than 20 years.  Analaine Pelaez paced the Thunderbirds with 13 kills and was followed closely by Jazmine Maafala and Cashaana Renfro, each with nine kills.  Southern Utah went on to split results with a 2-2 record at the 2009 season-opening tournament at Sam Houston State.

Southern Utah volleyball is still new to the game, entering only its second year of existence and having never played any of the teams that are on the slate for this weekend.

We expect to come out and play hard this weekend, head coach Debby Baker said.  We are still young, but almost everyone on this team was able to play a lot last year and I think that will really help us this year.

SUU will open the UniWyo Wyoming Invitational with Murray State on Friday morning at 9:00, followed by a match with the tournament host, Wyoming, that afternoon at 1:30.  The Thunderbirds will wrap up the four-game stretch with games against Northern Arizona (9:00 a.m.) and Central Arkansas (5:00 p.m.) on Saturday.

Live stats for each game are anticipated to be available online at suutbirds.com and at wyomingathletics.com.
