UVU Soccer Heads to Texas for UTEP Classic Add Comment    Sep 19, 2010

OREM, Utah --  After splitting two games to open the 2010 season, Utah Valley University soccer is back in action with pair of matches at the 13th Annual Miners' Classic at UTEP this weekend.

The Wolverines open the classic with Texas State on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. MT and will face host UTEP on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT. Fresno State is also participating in the tournament.

UVU won its season opener last Friday, 2-0 over Southern Utah at Rio Tinto Stadium, home of MLS Cup Champion Real Salt Lake.

Nicole Archibald Spencer scored the first goal after Andi Bagdan's 50-yard free kick hit the left post and Spencer was there for the rebound-header. The Wolverines' second goal came when Camille Broderick scored on a Regan Clifford assist.

Both goals came in the first half and the Wolverine defense and keeper Hailey Brown--who got her first career shutout--blanked the T-Birds. UVU is now 3-2-2 all-time in season openers.

Texas State dropped its season opener to Big XII Texas Tech, 2-0. In 2009, the Bobcats finished 14-6-1 overall and 8-0-1 in Southland Conference action to clinch back-to-back conference titles. The team returns 2009 SLC Player of the Year Britney Curry. UVU is 1-0-0 all-time vs. Texas State, winning the only prior match between the two during the 2008 season in Orem.

UTEP won its opening match, 1-0 over Northern Arizona, with junior GK Chandra Morden earning Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week after her seven-save shutout performance. The Wolverines and Miners have split four prior meeting with UVU winning 1-0 at UTEP in 2009.

Next week, Utah Valley travels to Pocatello, Idaho where the Wolverines will face Boise State and Idaho.
