UVU Soccer Opens 2010 Regular Season at Rio Tinto Stadium Add Comment    Sep 19, 2010

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley opens the 2010 soccer regular season on Friday vs. Southern Utah at 5 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Tickets are $5 and also includes admission for the Weber State/Utah State contest at 7:30 p.m. All kids 17 and under wearing a soccer jersey can get in for free.

The Wolverines enter 2010 on a six-match winning streak and after a slow start a year ago, were unbeaten in nine of their last 10 contests.

Friday's game will be UVU's first chance to play at the 20,000-seat Rio Tinto Stadium, home of Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake.

"Rio Tinto is a great venue. The field is top-notch. It's exciting for the team to go. Everything I've ever been involved in with them has been first class so it's going to be fun for the girls to see how things are done on the professional level," said head coach Brent Anderson. "It's going to be a good night for women's soccer and awareness out in the community."

Also this week, the Wolverines will travel to Logan on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match at Utah State.

UVU won both of its exhibition games, defeating Westminster 3-0 last Friday at home and topping Weber State on Tuesday in Ogden, 4-1.

Against Westminster, freshman Haley Curtis scored twice and Regan Clifford added a goal.

In Tuesday's win over Weber, Ashley Burdett scored twice while Nicole Archibald Spencer and Lauren Bluth also scored. Kelsey Kimball Cook had two assists for the Wolverines.

Utah Valley went 9-10-1 in 2009 including 5-0-1 in the Great West Conference before sweeping three games on its way to the GWC Tournament championship.
