UVU Soccer Opens Season With 2-0 Win Over In-State Rival Add Comment Sep 19, 2010
SANDY, Utah -- Two early goals were all Utah Valley needed to open regular season play with a 2-0 win over Southern Utah at Rio Tinto Stadium Friday evening.
"It's important for the confidence of the players to start the season with a win," said UVU head coach Brent Anderson. "Every time you play well and you win it just builds your confidence and that, I think, is the key for this team."
In the 17th minute Andi Bagdan took a 47-yard free kick that deflected off of the Southern Utah goalkeeper and came out. Nicole Archibald Spencer opened the scoring when she headed the loose ball into an open net.
Just eight minutes later Camille Broderick gave UVU the 2-0 lead when her shot found the back of the net. Regan Clifford, who had entered the game a minute before, assisted the goal.
UVU goalkeeper Hailey Brown saved four shots and recorded her first career shutout in the Wolverines seventh straight victory dating back to last season.
The Wolverines will continue play at Utah State on Sunday at 1 p.m. Anderson will be returning to Logan--his alma mater-- and where he was an assistant at Utah State for eight years.
The next home game for UVU will be on September 12, against Northern Colorado.
