Season Begins with 3-0 Loss at Utah Valley

OREM, Utah For the second consecutive season the Westminster womens soccer team opened the season with a loss at Utah Valley.  This time is was a 3-0 decision for the host Wolverines that dropped the Griffins to 0-1 on the season and 1-3 all-time in season openers.  This is an official game for the Griffins and an exhibition contest for Utah Valley.


After playing to a 0-0 tie at the intermission, Utah Valley took a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute on a breakaway goal from Regan Clifford.  Haley Curtis made it 2-0 for UVU with her goal in the 58th minute after finishing a cross from Ashley Burdett.  Curtis then finished a 1v1 after taking a through ball from Katey Turner for her second of the night and the final for the team in the 74th minute.


Although all UVU goals came in the second half, Westminster mounted a solid effort after the break.  The Griffins attempted all four shot attempts in the final 45 minutes and put together several great runs.  Tanisia Wilson recorded a solid shot in the 66th minute that was turned away by Wolverine keeper Lauren Sack.


Wilson led the Griffins with two shots and one on frame.  Freshman Jessica Harris put her first career shot on frame with a header early in the second half.  Rachel Watson was credited with the other shot by the Griffins.


The Griffins used 21 different players with seven freshmen making their collegiate debuts.  Harris and Claire Huntsberger each made a start in the first game of their collegiate career.  Lindsay Bekken played all 90 minutes between the pipes and allowed three goals in a game for the first time in her career while making three saves.


Westminster returns to action on Monday, August 16 when they travel to Pocatello, Idaho for a noon match-up against Idaho State.  That game will also be an exhibition for the host while an official game for the Griffins.
