DSC Completes Three Games in One Day; Go 2-1 Add Comment    Mar 05, 2011

ST. GEORGE Dixie State College baseball completed three games Friday in Pacific West Conference action against the Academy of Art Urban Knights.
 
The first brought an end to a suspended game from late February while the final two games were the regularly scheduled doubleheader.
 
Dixie State won 10-0 to formally end the game started in Oakland last Saturday and then followed with a series-opening win by the score of 9-2. Later in the afternoon, a ten-run Urban Knight lead proved insurmountable. Academy took the game 11-9 at Bruce Hurst Field.
 
Mike Vetter closed out the suspended game by inducing a double play. The Knights were stymied to five hits in the seven-inning affair. Sam Friend waited a week, but earned his first win.
 
Joe Andrade put the Red Storm (7-6, 4-2 PWC) on the board in the first inning of Fridays true first game after drawing a bases loaded walk.
 
Dixie State posted a six spot in the third frame. Three doubles by Friend, Tyson LIttlewood and Andrade sparked the rally.
 
After posting single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, Andrade doubled home two in a three- run seventh frame.
 
Starting pitcher Mike Dedrick reaped the benefits of the Storms 17-hit attack to earn his second win over the Knights. The right-hander pitched five innings of two-run baseball while striking out five.
 
Game two was a complete nightmare early for James Mahler and the DSC defense. Four errors in the first three innings led to six unearned runs. Art U would tack on five more run to lead 11-1 after four-and-a-half innings.
 
Frustrated with his offense, head coach Mike Littlewood used the bottom of the fifth inning to send a message. He used seven pinch-hitters in the inning it produced results. Seven runs on four hits later, Dixie State was back into the ballgame only trailing by three, 11-8.
Judd Jensen, one of the players that entered as a pinch hitter, pulled DSC within two runs with an RBI double in the sixth inning.
 
Any attempt for a movie-like comeback fell short in the seventh when the Red Storm were retired in order.
 
Mahler took the loss allowing 11 runs, six earned, on seven hits in four innings. Jordon Blanchard and Kyle DiMartino combined to keep the Knights hitless over three innings.
