    SCOTT DOWNING is beginning his 5th season as head coach of the Bears.  ... Coming into Saturdays game his overall record at NC is 7-39. Downing is 0-4 vs. the Wildcats, 0-2 vs. WSU in Ogden. ... Downing served as an assistant coach at Nebraska (1984-86 / 2003-05), Purdue (1997-2002) and Wyoming (1987-96).

SERIES HISTORY (4-0 Weber State)
    Saturday is the 5th meeting between the two schools.Despite the relatively closeness of the two schools, the two teams never met on the gridiron until 2006 when Northern Colorado joined the Big Sky Conference.
2006 - Ogden  26-21 W

...In the first-ever meeting, which was televised on ESPNU, WSU rolled to a 19-0 halftime lead, then survived a furious NC 4th quarter rally, to post a 26-21 win. ... WSU was up 26-7 after a 34-yd TD run by Trevyn Smith with 12:26 left. ... NC scored two touchdowns, the last one coming with 2:56 left. ... NC got the on sides kick but threw an incomplete on a 4th-and-19 play with 30 seconds left.

2007 - Greeley  23-0 W

...Bryant Eteuati single-handedly beat the Bears. He had a single-game career high 8 catches for 146 yards and 2 TDs and had 223 all-purpose yards. ... Trevyn Smith carried 24 times for 113 yards and scored on a 59-yard run. ... WSUs defense held the Bears to just 133 total yards.

2008 - Ogden  17-10 W

...WSUs offense rolled up 571 yards, with Cameron Higgins completing 27-37 passes for 413 yards and 2 TDs, but three lost fumbles and an interception kept the Bears alive. ... WSUs defense held NC to just 142 total yards - 36 on the ground -  ... WSU led 10-0 at half, but scored just seven 2nd half points on a 27-yard pass from Higgins to Cody Nakamura with 14 seconds left in the 3rd qtr.  ... The Bears scored their only touchdown with 2:26 left on a 5-yd pass from Bryan Waggener to Jason Caprioli. ... NC tried an on sides kick but WSU recovered.  ... The Bears defense forced a 4th-and-one situation at the NC 41 with 1:40 left but  Trevyn Smith ran for 8 yards for the 1st down and WSU ran out the clock.

2009 - Greeley  28-20 W
...With Trevyn Smith out (suspended due to rules violations the night before), Colorado native Bo Bolen stepped in (ran in) and carried a career-high 37 times for a career high 207 yards, leading the Cats to a 28-20 win. ... WSU led 21-7 at halftime, only to see the Bears score 13 unanswered points, pulling to within one at 21-20 with 6:28 left. ... The Cats then drove 62 yards in 6 plays with Higgins finding Joe Collins on a 4-yd TD pass. ... NC got the ball back, but on the second play from scrimmage, Thyrell Lewis intercepted Bryan Waggeners pass. ... WSU made it to the NC six-yard line, but took a knee twice to end the game.


SCOUTING  THE  BEARS

    Northern Colorado opened up its 2010 season with a 54-0 thumping of Adams State (Alamosa, Colorado) at home last Saturday.  ... NC rolled up 452 yards of total offense, and held the Grizzlies to just 104 yards.  ... ANDRE HARRIS (6-1, 220 Sr.) had a big afternoon with 18 carries for 154 yards. ... JACE DAVIS (6-1, 190 So.) had three catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns. One of those grabs was a 70-yard scoring bomb.  ... KOREY ASKEW (5-9, 180 Sr.) was named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week. He had five total tackles, three unassisted, and two interceptions. He returned one of those interceptions back 18 yards for a touchdown.  ...  Northern Colorado was picked to finish 7th in the 2010 Big Sky pre-season coaches and media polls. ... Last season (2009), Northern Colorado led the Big Sky in Pass Defense allowing just 205.8 passing yards per game.

 COACH RON McBRIDE
 Weber State head coach RON McBRIDE begins his 6th  season as head coach of the Wildcats and his 19th overall as a head coach on the NCAA Division I level. ...  McBride is now 32-28 (.533) at WSU and 120-91 (.569) overall.    ... Mac is 24-16 (.600) in Big Sky Conference regular season games, he is 4-0 vs. Northern Colorado.  ...   In 2008 McBride was named the Big Sky Conference Coach-of-the-Year after leading the Wildcats to a 10-4 record overall and a 7-1 mark and the conference co-championship in Big Sky Conference play. It marked the first time since 1968 that the Wildcats had captured the Big Sky Conference championship.  ...  McBride guided his Wildcats to a 45-28 win over #2 ranked Montana during the regular season and a stunning 49-35 road win over #3 ranked Cal Poly in the first round of the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs.   Twelve of McBrides athletes earned First Team All-Big Sky Conference, the most by any team in a single season in the 47-year history of the league. Twenty Wildcats earned some type of all-conference honor in 2008.  ...  Ten Wildcats earned Second or Third Team All-America honors either by The Associated Press or The Sports Network.  ...  In 2009, he became the first coach in Weber State football history to guide the Wildcats to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs.  WSU had made the playoff just four times since 1978, two of them have now come in the Ron McBride era.  ... McBride, who will turn 71 on October 14, is one only SIX coaches in NCAA Division I (FBS / FCS) who are currently coaching.  The other five are: Joe Paterno (Penn State), Howard Schnellenberger (Florida Atlantic), Bill Snyder (Kansas State), Bob Ford (University of Albany) and Jerry Moore (Appalachian State.

   Back for his 12th season as the football radio voice of Weber State football is Wildcat CARL ARKY. He will be joined in the broadcast booth by former WSU standout defensive back TY SPARROW.  ...  RYAN PICKENS will give brief sideline reports. ...  Once again, all Weber State football games will be carried LIVE on KLO (1430 AM) with the Pre-Game Show beginning 30 minutes for each kickoff.  ... Saturdays game is being televised regionally on ALTITUDE TV out of Denver, Colorado with DOUG ANDERSEN calling the action and BRANDT BOYER providing analysis.  ...  It will air live on DISH Network channel 410 and DIRECTV channel 681.  It will be taped delayed starting at 8:00 p.m. on Comcast.


BIG SKY  OPENERS  /  HOME  OPENERS
    The 2010 season marks the 48th season of BIG SKY CONFERENCE football. ... The Wildcats are 20-27-0 in Big Sky Conference opening games, and are 16-10-0 when opening the Big Sky season AT HOME.  ...
