DAVIS, Calif. - The Utah Valley softball team dropped its first two games of a four-game series at UC Davis Saturday afternoon at La Rue Field in Davis, Calif. (6-0 & 1-0). The Wolverines (1-9) and Aggies (7-9) will conclude the series with two more games Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. MT/9 a.m. PT.
In the second game UVU freshman Josi Summers was the tough-luck loser of the one-run affair as UC Davis' Jessica Thweatt and Alex Holmes combined to no-hit the Wolverines.
"We didn't hit the ball real well today. But both of our pitchers, Josi and Kyli, had solid outings and threw very effectively." UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "Josi only allowed five hits and just one run in the second game and Kyli had one rough inning where our defense didn't help her out any but she ended up only giving up two earned runs."
In the first game of the day, Kyli Flanary started off in control from the circle as she shut down the Aggies - a 2010 NCAA Regional team - allowing just two hits for the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Flanary gave up two earned runs but six total scored in the frame as the Wolverine defense committed two errors, which aided the Aggies.
UVU threatened offensively in the first, second, sixth and seventh innings as they got runners into scoring position in all four frames but just couldn't manage to score.
Wolverine freshman Amanda Robinson led the way from the plate as she finished 2-for-3 in the game, while senior Meghan Yocom and sophomore Charlee Cisneros each finished 1-for-3.
UC Davis' Holmes pitched six scoreless innings to pick up the win for the Aggies.
In the second game of the afternoon, Summers, Thweatt and Holmes continued the effective pitching trend as hitters had a hard time getting anything going off of them.
UCD finally broke the trend in the third inning when Holmes tripled with two outs and scored the lone run of the game on an RBI single from Jessica Gonzalez.
Four players reached base via walks for UVU in the game and the Wolverines threatened in both the second and third innings as the runners made it into scoring position. Yocom walked to lead off the third inning and made it all the way to third base with two outs but junior Amanda Perez grounded out to end the inning.
Summers ended up taking the loss in the second game but she allowed just one run on five hits.
The series will conclude Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. MT/9 a.m. PT.
