Utah Blows Out New Mexico, Next Up San Jose State Add Comment Sep 19, 2010
If you happened to miss Saturdays game, well you missed a very lopsided game. Luckily many of the voters dont watch Utah games, and just check final scores. Utah did more than just cover the spread and silence all the New Mexico has been a tough place to play for the Utes talk. They seem to have silenced the special teams question marks as well. Although there were a few ify snaps to the punter. Many have started speculating that Terrance Cains record performance (completing 87% of his passes) may possibly be enough to become the big man on campus. Whittingham stated during the broadcast, Wynn is our quarterback, so I wouldnt entertain the thought of him losing the starting job based off some good games against horrible teams.
It wasnt all smiles on Saturday, sure Utah has corrected a lot of its issues, but there are some lingering ones that need to be cleaned up quick! For some reason, Shakys shaky start has rubbed off on the rest the team. I have never seen such a severe case of fumbleitis in my lifeif that were a word Im sure I just spelled it wrong. But the fact of the matter is that Utah cannot seem to keep both hands on the ball. Shaky has completely redeemed himself, especially after returning yet another punt for a touchdown, however, nobody else can seem to hang on to the ball now. 4 different players fumbled, one of which was recovered and ran back for 7 of UNLVs points. The Utes may be able to get away with those kind of mistakes against teams like New Mexico, but mistakes like that against Air Force or TCU and youre talking about game changing consequences.
The good news is that San Jose St. is only averaging 11 points a game. Putting up only 16 points against Southern Utah. The defense has allowed allowed well over 400 yards of offense in each of their games. Although there are a lot of things to be happy about as Ute fans, until we can go an entire game without a fumble, I find it hard to rest easy just yet. One game at a time, and every opponent needs to be taken seriously, but I will be very disappointed if I walk around of campus and I dont see several Utah football players with footballs duct taped to their hands. Its just not acceptable to be putting the ball on the turn that many times in a game.
