Wynn vs. Heaps Add Comment Aug 13, 2010
I am taking a stab at this. I am only beginning to do my research on this, but wanted to post some thoughts for anyone willing to chime in.
When looking at the two QB's, I am trying to decide which one will be the better quarterback this year. I am not looking down the road, past this season, just looking at this year only.
So, Wynn. He is a sophomore, coming back from a half a season of play. Winning some good games, and playing pretty well. Coming back from an interception in a big game throwing six completions in a row after that. So my take on Wynn. Has a great offensive of line to protect him. Running back galore to help share some of the load, including retuning key members at that position. A good WR core that can handle a young QB, but they also have some real speed. An offensive of coordinator that is in his second year. Good or bad at the job, he now has some experience and understands the system better. A lot for Wynn to rely on and a good season to improve himself.
What I am not sure of, or do not like on Wynn. To me, he looks afraid to take a hit. Watching him last year scramble, he would run out of bounds too early, trying to avoid a hit. With that as well, he seems a bit cocky. Watch when he runs, it looks like he is trying to prove he is cool and capable, but not doing what it takes to make things happen. He has the skills, but needs to be more confident, throw the deep ball, and work on team versus self. Offensive Coordinator, this is the other issue. He needs to call good plays, not so obvious.
Heaps, the top rated QB in the nation. Went to BYU to prepare for a mission, wait, I mean to play football. Guess his plans are to start as a QB and forgo the Mormon mission. So, you have the top rated QB, but he is a freshman. He has a lot to learn, but he is the best in the nations. He has great passing skills that match that of all past BYU quarterbacks. Relativity good defense to keep the score manageable.
What I am not sure of is the BYU offense. You have a new quarterback, new running backs and a new tight end. These three positions are key to any team, but especially to BYU. The TE is one of the most important positions, and now you have a new TE to train. The RB core will struggle. No one of them is even close to the leading rusher that was kicked out of school recently. It is a true rebuilding year for BYU, but Mendenhall has a way of getting everyone going.
My take. BYU may have a real learning curve over the first three games. Washington at home I think can go either way. With the team so new, it could end up in a loss, Air Force next, on the road, tough game especially with new key players. This also is a game that will show us a lot, how this young QB can handle whatever happens moving to the next game, the first conference game, that could have a lot of meaning if overlooked. FSU on the road. Two road games in a row, and a tough FSU team. I predict the first three games go one win, two losses. I will say this, watch out Utah, as Heaps if the starter in November will be ready for the rivalry, and the entire team will have a lot to prove over the new PAC 12 team of the future.
Ok, now Utah has a tough game one, but they should win, they are at home against Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh has a great RB, but this kind of road game, and a new QB should mean a win for Utah. This will also allow for Utah to get the defense in order fast and allow for Wynn to show us how smart he really is. The next two games, UNLV and New Mexico, must wins, will win. This team is too good to overlook these teams, but allows Wynn to show off some big number and build confidence in himself and the coordinator.
