Post-Game Notes vs. Louisiana Tech (3/5/11)

TEAM NOTES         

Utah States 28-3 record is a new school record for most wins during the regular season.  Furthermore, its three losses trail only the 2003-04 team that finished the regular season with a 25-2 record for the fewest regular season losses in school history.  That 28-3 record is also the best start to a season in school history after 31 games.

With its 15-1 WAC record, Utah State becomes just the seventh team in the 49-year history of the Western Athletic Conference to lose one or fewer league games.  Furthermore, USUs .9375 winning percentage in league games this year is tied with Utahs 1990-91 and 1996-97 teams for the third-best winning percentage in WAC history.  Only two teams have gone undefeated in the history of the WAC as TCU went 14-0 during the 1997-98 season and Utah went 14-0 during the 1998-99 season.

Utah State improved to 28-3 on the season and those 28 wins are tied with the 1999-2000 and 2000-01 teams for the second-most in school history.  USU also improved to 15-1 in WAC play and those 15 conference wins are the third most in school history behind the 2003-04 team that went 17-1 and the 1999-2000 team that went 16-0 in the Big West Conference.

The 30 points allowed by Utah State are its fewest since defeating Montana Tech, 79-29, on Dec. 9, 2000.  It is also the fewest points allowed on the road in school history according to available records which goes back to the 1957-58 season.  Those 30 points are also the fewest allowed against a Division I opponent since beating Montana State, 68-30, during the 1944-45 season.

The 42-point win by Utah State is its largest this year and second-largest conference win in school history trailing the 44-point win USU had against Hawaii (98-54) at home last year.

Utah State is now 95-71 in road games under head coach Stew Morrill, including a 67-41 record against conference opponents and a 30-18 WAC mark.  During the last four years, USU is 30-11 on the road and 34-15 away from home.

Utah State is now 11-3 on the road this year and those 11 road wins are tied with the 1959-60 and 2008-09 teams for the most in school history.

Utah State is now 22-7 as a ranked team under Morrill, including a 10-1 record this year.

Utah State is now 23-0 this year and has won 47 straight games when leading at the half.  Under Morrill, USU is now 254-23 when leading at the half.

Utah State is 19-0 this year and has won 27 straight games when holding its opponents under 60 points.

Utah State has now won 43 of its last 46 regular season games dating back to last season.  USU has also won 43 of its last 48 WAC games during the last three years.

Utah State is now 19-2 this year when its bench scores more points than its opponents bench after out-scoring Louisiana Techs reserves 27-8.

Utah State has now won seven straight games when finishing the regular season on the road.

Utah State is now 24-1 on the season when it out-rebounds its opponents.

The 30 points scored by Louisiana Tech are the fewest in school history.

The 17.9 percent shooting (10-56) by Louisiana Tech is the worst shooting percentage by an Aggie opponent in school history according to available records.

Louisiana Tech was 0-of-14 from three-point range marking the first time since the 1997-98 season that a USU opponent did not make a three-point basket as Long Beach State was 0-of-12 from behind the arc.

PLAYER NOTES

Senior forward Tai Wesley scored in double-figures for the 24th time this year and 98th time in his career with 11 points.  Wesley also had eight rebounds in the game to give him 846 in his career moving him ahead of Brian Jackson (840) and into sixth-place all-time at USU.  Wesley also tied his season-high with three steals.

Senior guard Tyler Newbold scored in double-figures for the ninth time this year and 42nd time in his career with 14 points to give him 1,006 points for his career becoming the 35th player in school history to score 1,000 points.  Newbold now ranks 34th all-time in scoring in school history.

Senior guard Brian Green scored in double-figures for the 15th time this year and 23rd time in his career with 10 points.

Senior guard/forward Pooh Williams made a pair of three-pointers in the game giving him 112 for his career and tying him with Troy Rolle (112) for eighth all-time in school history.  Williams also took his third charge of the season.

Seniors Tyler Newbold and Tai Wesley both played in their 136th career game at USU which ranks first-place all-time in school history.  Senior Pooh Williams played in his 128th career game which ranks fourth all-time in school history.

Newbold started his 126th career game which ranks second all-time in school history, while Wesley started his 125th career game to rank third all-time.

Junior forward Brady Jardine had his team-leading 25th dunk of the season.

Junior forward Morgan Grim took his 10th charge of the season.
