UVU's Broadbent Doxey Named GWC Player of the Week Add Comment Sep 19, 2010
NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Utah Valley's Kayli Doxey and Houston Baptist's Courtney Whittleman have been selected Great West Conference Volleyball Players of the Week after outstanding performances last week. The awards were announced Tuesday by the conference office.
Doxey was awarded the offensive player of the week honor as she posted 62 kills, 28 digs, six service aces and 5 blocks on the week and was instrumental in UVU's wins over Air Force and Fresno State. The senior from Gilbert, Ariz., recorded a double-double in each match -- 21 kills and 11 digs vs. Air Force and 22 kills and 12 digs vs. Fresno State. The outside hitter also added 19 kills in a 3-1 loss at Utah, giving her a match-high in kills in all three matches.
Whittleman, a junior libero from Houston, Texas, won the defensive honor after posting 86 digs in four matches last week for a 5.38 average. The Huskies recorded 3-0 sweeps of Prairie View A&M and Jackson State and suffered losses to Louisiana and Nicholls State, each in five sets. Whittleman was named to the Ragin' Cajun Invitational All-Tournament team after tying a season-high 31 digs vs. host Louisiana. She has also registered 20-plus digs in five of eight matches this season and averages 5.61 digs per set on the year.
Others nominated for Offensive Player of the Week were Heather Leaverton (Houston Baptist), Devin Trefz (North Dakota) and Kim Bulaga (South Dakota).
Defensive nominees included Mysta Townsell (Chicago State), Courtney Halvorson (North Dakota), Jill Fields (South Dakota) and Dani Robison (Utah Valley).
The Wolverine women's volleyball team will be in action tonight at 7 p.m. when they play at Boise State.
