OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University senior Kayli Doxey helped lead the Wolverines (2-4) past Fresno State in four-sets on Saturday in Orem (22-25, 25-20, 25-16 and 25-19) as she put up a double-double with a match-high 22 kills and 12 digs.
Senior Dani Robison was also instrumental in the Wolverine win as she finished in double-digits in kills with 13. Freshman Brookelyn Campbell led the way in assists again with a match-high 52, while senior Kathleen Stevens and junior Chelsey Heaps added 23 and 18 digs respectively. Junior Sarah Clement also had a solid match with nine kills and a match-high seven blocks.
"The feeling on the court was so much better than when we started yesterday's match," UVU head coach Sam Atoa said. "We learned so much from the way that we started to the way that we finished and what we wanted to be able to do today. I was really proud of the girls and how they were able to sustain that momentum from last night."
After dropping the first set 25-22, UVU came out looking strong in the second set as it quickly doubled-up Fresno State (2-3) by a score of 10-5. The Wolverines then continued to extend their lead in the set as they went up 14-7, following a kill from junior Jaicee Kuresa.
The Bulldogs then managed to get the score within three at 18-15 but UVU followed up by scoring the next three points to take a 21-15 advantage. Fresno State countered right back with a run of its own though as they scored three consecutive points to cut the deficit back to three at 21-18. The Bulldogs then got within two points at 22-20 but UVU answered by scoring the next and final three points to win the set 25-20 and tie the overall match score at one win apiece.
UVU then went up two sets to one after a fine showing in the third set. With the Wolverines only leading 16-13 UVU got in the zone as it seemingly couldn't do anything wrong as it managed to score the next six points to take a commanding 22-13 lead. During that stretch, UVU scored four of the six points by kill, two from Doxey and two from Robison. Robison also had a solo block during the stretch. UVU scored the final point of the set on a block by Clement and Doxey to take a 2-1 lead.
With UVU looking to win three sets in a row for the second consecutive day, the Wolverines started set number four just they way they wanted as they took a 3-0 advantage. Fresno State managed to get back in it however when they cut the deficit within one at 11-10. UVU then answered by scoring three straight points to go up 14-10.
The Bulldogs wouldn't down without a fight as they cut it back within one at 16-15. UVU countered right back though scoring the next five points to take a 21-15 lead. The advantage proved to be was too much for Fresno State to come back from as UVU pulled out the 25-19 win. The final two points of the match were scored by UVU on a Doxey kill and a Campbell block.
As a team UVU finished with 20 blocks to the Bulldogs seven. The Wolverines also outhit Fresno State as UVU finished with 61 kills (.259) to the Bulldogs 49 (.160).
Back in the first set, the Wolverines found themselves trailing 10-8 early. UVU then got going though as it scored three straight points, one on a Robison kill and the other two on consecutive service aces from Heaps, to take a 11-10 advantage.
From there, the first set went back-and-forth until late when Fresno State scored six straight points to go up 21-16. UVU battled back and cut the deficit all the way to one at 23-22 but that is as close as it would get the rest of the way as the Bulldogs pulled out the 25-22 set one win.
The Wolverines will be back in action when they travel to Boise, Idaho on Tuesday, Sept. 7, to play at Boise State.
"It's always nice to be able to finish at home with a win before heading out on the road," Atoa added. "Boise is never an easy place to play. They have a really nice team and we for sure have our hands full as far as what we need to do. I like this momentum that we have right now and I hope that it will continue to carry over."
