UVU WRESTLING: Wolverine Wrestling Unveils its 2010-11 Schedule Add Comment    Sep 19, 2010

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University head man Greg Williams released his 2010-11 season schedule Thursday. It includes three home conference duals; the hosting of the fourth annual UVU Open and a much-anticipated rematch with nationally ranked Boise State in Boise, a year removed from the Wolverines largest upset in school history when they downed the Broncos at home.

In 2010-11, UVU will also wrestle five of its six fellow Western Wrestling Conference foes. The past two years, the Wolverines have finished with identical 4-1 conference marks, which was good enough for second and third place finishes.

"We're excited about the upcoming year," Williams said. "We are trying to toughen up our schedule every year. We have Boise State who is ranked as high as No. 3 in a couple of polls and Wyoming who is in the Top-20 this year. We also had a couple of others scheduled that dropped us so that was a disappointment. But the schedule is going to be pretty tough as the conference continues to getter better every year so we are looking forward to those challenges."

The Wolverines will first showcase their 2010-11 squad at the UVU Intrasquad Duals at home on Nov. 4. Following the exhibition contest, UVU will officially begin its season in Powell, Wyo., on Nov. 6, at the Trapper Open. A week later UVU will be back in the state of Wyoming -- this time Laramie -- to compete at the Cowboy Open. The Wolverines will round out the first month of the season at the Kaufman-Brand Open in Omaha, Neb., on Nov. 20.

In the month of December, UVU will compete at two of the early season national-scene tournaments when they take part in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 3-4, in Vegas and the Southern Scuffle on Dec. 29-30, in Greensboro, N.C. In between those dates the Wolverines will make a return trip to Nebraska when they'll travel to Kearney, Neb., to take part in the UNK Loper Open on Dec. 11.

In the month of January, the Wolverines return home to host their first conference dual of the year when they take on Northern Colorado on Jan. 7. The very next day UVU will then host the all day UVU Open in the Shurian Family Activity Center.

On Jan. 15, UVU will travel to Arlington, Texas, and wrestle at the Lone Star Duals. There, UVU will take on three different opponents that will be named at a later date.

The Wolverines will then return home for a marquee matchup against conference foe Wyoming on Jan. 22. UVU will then head up to Boise, Idaho, for its big rematch of the season when it goes up against Boise State on Feb. 4.

UVU will close out its regular season with three more conference duals.

The first one will be the Wolverines final home matchup when they host the Air Force Academy on Feb. 11. The final two will then take place in the Dakotas, as UVU will compete at South Dakota State on Feb. 18, and at North Dakota State on Feb. 19.

After the conclusion of the regular season, the Wolverines will then send its top-10 wrestlers to the NCAA West Regional/WWC Championships that will be hosted by Air Force on March 5. There, UVU will be striving to win its first conference title as well as qualify as many of its grapplers as it can for the NCAA Championships.

The 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will be held at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Penn., on March 17-19.

In 2010-11 the Wolverines return nine of their 10 starters from a year ago, three of which were NCAA qualifiers in 2009-10.

"Our real goal this year is to get more guys to nationals and to get some All-Americans. We're excited about that opportunity and we're excited about what our guys need to do to prepare for that. We feel like we will make another step forward this year and improve on what we did last year," Williams added.
