Defense Shines in Scrimmage with Salt Lake Community College Add Comment Sep 19, 2010
SALT LAKE CITY The Westminster womens volleyball team played host to Salt Lake Community College in a scrimmage on Monday night in the Behnken Field House. The two teams battled through five sets with Westminster taking four of the five. Salt Lake won the opening set in a 33-31 thriller with the Griffins claiming the final four by scores of: 25-20, 25-23, 25-19, 15-6.
Defense was the theme of the night for Westminster as they held the visiting squad to a .000 hitting efficiency. Westminster posted 22 blocks and 89 digs defensively while playing all 14 players. Three players posted double figures in digs and seven others recorded at least three blocks. Offensively Westminster hit just .083 with 45 kills and 13 service aces.
Clotile Harris finished the night with 11 kills and eight blocks. The freshman hit .143 while adding three service aces and five digs. Ericka Evans and Kenzie Mitchell each had eight kills with Evans recording 15 digs in just four sets. Kydnall Kordakis finished the match with a team leading 16 digs. Ashley Marchant chipped in 12 digs and three kills in her first action since last September.
Stephanie Jones posted 11 blocks on the evening, including two solo. She also contributed five kills and four digs. Katie Vance added six blocks and one ace.
Westminster begins the 2010 season on Friday, August 27 when they host Daemen (N.Y.) College in the second match of the Tournament of Champions in the Behnken Field House. Westminsters match is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will follow the opening match between the College of Idaho and Azusa Pacific (Calif.). That match is slated for a noon first serve.
